Early History of Gary Alumni Chapter 

  • 1950 - Brother Emmit McCollough was the first Brother to be initiated in Gary Alumni.

  • 1956 - The Founder's Day celebration found our banquet speaker to be Robert Birdsong Jr. who was the chapter's first scholarship recipient (1947). 

  • 1963 & 1964 - Scholarship Dances featured entertainment by Count Basie and his band.  

  • 1964-65  - Brother H. H. Holloway, Founder's Day speaker. 

  • 1965-66 - Founder's Day celebration found Brother C. Roger Wilson as the guest speaker.  

  • 1966 - Gary Alumni presented it's first Dawn Dance entitiled K.K.K. (Kappa Kasual Karnival) on September 19, 1966.   

  • 1967 - John D. Smith highlighted the Founder's Day celebration by receiving the chapter's first "Kappa of the Year" award.    

  • 1967 - Gary Alumni hosts some 1500 guests at its annual Black and White ball.     

  • 1967 - February 1967, Gary Alumni presented a first to the City of Gary by sponsoring the first closed circuit (T.V.) showing the Cassius Clay vs. Ernie Terrell championship fight.
